How We Prepare Shuttlecock Samples for OEM Buyers: Model Marking, Protection and Testing
Before a buyer places a bulk shuttlecock order, there is one stage we consider more important than quotations, product photos or factory videos:
sample testing.
Recently, we prepared another set of shuttlecock samples for an overseas customer.
The photos from this shipment are not polished marketing pictures. They show what sample preparation actually looks like in our daily work: several different shuttlecock models packed in simple kraft tubes, each tube clearly marked with its model number, individually protected for transportation, and finally packed into an outer carton for shipment.
It may look simple.
But there is a reason we prepare samples this way.
When a customer is comparing several shuttlecock models, the most important thing is not beautiful packaging.
It is making sure they know exactly which shuttlecock they are testing.

For this sample shipment, we prepared several shuttlecock options for the customer.
Each sample tube was marked by model before packing.
For example, different tubes were identified separately as different product references rather than being mixed together.
This is especially important when a buyer is testing several products with relatively small differences in:
- feather grade;
- cork structure;
- flight stability;
- speed;
- durability;
- hitting feel;
- price level.
After playing with several shuttlecocks for an hour, it is surprisingly easy to forget which model produced which result.
That is why clear model marking matters.
The buyer should be able to finish a test and write something like:
Model A: good flight, slightly softer hitting feel.
Model B: better durability.
Model C: preferred by stronger players.
Without a clear sample code, this feedback quickly becomes unreliable.
Sample Packaging Does Not Need to Look Like Retail Packaging
The tubes shown in these photos are simple kraft sample tubes.
They are not final retail packaging.
That is intentional.
At the sample stage, our first priority is product evaluation.
Before spending time and money on:
- custom printed tubes;
- embossed caps;
- anti-counterfeit labels;
- barcodes;
- speed stickers;
- premium finishing;
the buyer should first determine whether the shuttlecock itself is suitable.
There is little value in developing beautiful packaging for a product that has not yet passed the customer’s playing test.
For a new OEM project, we normally prefer this sequence:
Test the shuttlecock first. Develop the packaging after the product is selected.
That keeps the process much more efficient.
Why We Mark the Model Directly on the Sample Tube
For sample orders, handwritten or temporary model identification can actually be very practical.
It immediately tells the customer:
This tube contains this model.
There is no need to guess from feather appearance.
There is no need to compare an email attachment with several nearly identical tubes.
There is no risk of confusing an unfinished OEM package with the final commercial design.
For us, the marking also helps during sample preparation.
Before the carton is closed, we can check the model numbers again against the sample list.
It is a simple system, but simple systems are often the easiest to verify.
Every Sample Needs Protection During International Shipping
Feather shuttlecocks are lightweight, but they are not products that should be thrown loosely into a shipping carton.
The feather skirt can be compressed.
The tube can be dented.
Repeated movement inside the carton can damage the samples before the buyer even tests them.
For this shipment, the sample tubes were individually wrapped with protective cushioning material before being placed into the carton.
The objective is straightforward:
the shuttlecock arriving at the customer’s court should be in the same condition as the shuttlecock we packed at the factory.
This matters because damaged transportation packaging can interfere with the sample evaluation.
If feathers are crushed during shipping, the buyer may think the product itself has a quality problem when the real problem happened during transportation.
The Outer Carton Is the Final Protection
After the individual tubes were identified and protected, they were placed together in a corrugated export carton.
The carton was then sealed for international transport.
Again, this is not complicated.
But every stage has a purpose:
Model identification → individual protection → carton packing → shipment
For a small sample parcel, proper packing may seem like a minor issue.
From the customer’s side, however, this parcel may determine whether a much larger commercial order follows.
We therefore do not treat samples as unimportant simply because the quantity is small.
We Do Not Always Recommend the Most Expensive Shuttlecock
Another reason we often send several models is that the most expensive product is not necessarily the best choice for every buyer.
A customer may tell us:
“I want good quality.”
But “good quality” can mean different things in different markets.
One distributor may need a high-grade goose feather shuttlecock for tournament players.
Another may need a durable club shuttlecock that offers a better balance between performance and price.
Another customer may be building a new private label brand and needs a product that can reach a specific retail price.
So instead of automatically sending only our highest-priced model, we prefer to understand:
- who will use the shuttlecock;
- what level they play at;
- the target retail price;
- expected durability;
- preferred speed;
- competing products in the local market.
Then we can recommend several realistic options.
The purpose of sending samples is not to prove that the most expensive model is the best.
It is to find the right model for the customer’s market.
What Should an OEM Buyer Record During Sample Testing?
When several shuttlecock samples arrive, we recommend keeping the model codes visible during testing.
Do not remove all the shuttlecocks and mix them together.
Test one model at a time.
A simple sample evaluation sheet can include:

The testing does not need to become a laboratory experiment.
But it should be organised.
Otherwise, buyers may finish several tubes of samples and still be unable to explain why they prefer one model over another.
Photos Can Show the Samples. Testing Makes the Decision.
We can send a customer detailed photos of the feathers.
We can photograph the cork base.
We can record production videos.
We can show speed testing and packaging.
All of that is useful.
But none of it replaces the buyer actually playing with the shuttlecock.
This is why we repeatedly encourage serious OEM buyers to test physical samples before confirming bulk production.
A photograph cannot tell you exactly how the shuttlecock feels when it leaves the racket.
A video cannot tell you whether local club players like the speed.
And a quotation cannot tell you whether the durability is good enough for your market.
The sample can.
Sample Codes Also Become a Reference for Future Communication
Clear model identification remains useful after testing.
Instead of saying:
“We like the one in the third tube you sent us.”
the buyer can simply say:
“We prefer DL-04.”
That makes communication much easier.
From that point, we can discuss the exact product:
- speed requirement;
- order quantity;
- custom tube;
- logo;
- label;
- carton;
- production lead time;
- price.
The selected sample becomes the starting reference for the OEM order.
This is one reason good sample management can prevent problems later in production.
Small Sample Orders Deserve Serious Attention
A sample shipment may contain only a few tubes.
A bulk order may contain thousands.
But the relationship often begins with those few tubes.
For a new buyer, the sample shipment is one of the first opportunities to evaluate the supplier.
Did the factory send the correct models?
Were they clearly identified?
Were the products protected?
Did they match the specifications discussed by email?
Did the supplier recommend sensible options rather than simply pushing the most expensive product?
These small details influence whether the buyer feels comfortable moving to the next stage.
From a Sample Tube to a Bulk OEM Order
For us, sample preparation is not simply a courier task.
It is part of product development.
The process normally looks like this:
Buyer requirement

Suitable shuttlecock models selected
↓
Samples clearly marked
↓
Samples protected and shipped
↓
Buyer conducts playing tests
↓
Feedback and model comparison
↓
Final product selected
↓
OEM packaging and bulk production begin
This process takes more time than sending a price list.
But it also reduces the chance that both sides spend months working on the wrong product.
Final Thoughts
These photos show a very ordinary part of our work.
Simple kraft tubes.
Handwritten model numbers.
Protective wrapping.
One shipping carton.
Nothing particularly glamorous.
But this is often where a serious OEM shuttlecock project begins.
Before custom branding, before mass production and before thousands of tubes are packed, the buyer needs to answer one basic question:
Which shuttlecock actually works best for my market?
That is why we mark every sample clearly.
That is why we protect it before shipment.
And that is why we encourage buyers to test the product rather than judge it only from a screen.
Good OEM development does not start with the logo.
It starts with the right shuttlecock.
